Home relocation has got a lot of challenges but you already know that the challenges manifold when a single woman is moving from one state to another. She has to fight the regressive mindset of society and ensure her safety wherever she goes. So, naturally, a move become double stressful for her. But, with proper knowledge and organized planning, you can avoid being in a mess and enjoy a hassle-free long distance home relocation.

The best long distance moving tips and checklist

Women have come a long way from staying in the home all the time to relocating alone, be it to a different city, state or even abroad. So, help yourself by learning more on how you can make your move, especially the long distance moving smoother and stress-free.

Here is the moving checklist for a single woman that can help you get it right:

Avoid moving in hurry

First and foremost, it is important that you avoid moving in a hurry because with too much less time in hand, you are bound to do mistakes which you cannot afford to make. So, unless you are in an emergency situation where you will have to move in a few days, do not rush things. Take your time and plan your long distance move properly. The more time you have, the more the chances of everything going perfect.

Research the place

Safety always comes first and must never be compromised especially if you are a single woman. So, make sure you research about the place where you are moving to. Take careful note on how safe the location is for single women by learning about the crime rates on women there.

See, it is hard to find any city, state or country without crimes but the ratio of crimes committed against women is something you should consider. So, take note of that and accordingly decide whether to move there or not.

Since you are a single woman, I would always request you to find a home first in the new city/state or country you are about to relocate before you actually relocate. This is because it may be hard for you to find a home after relocating in an unknown area within few days without any help. So, it is better to avoid any risks and find a home in a safe neighborhood before relocating.

Now, if you are not able to decide sitting here, then, at least, find a temporary place to live and then after judging things find a home after few days or months for long term purpose.

While you are searching for home, make sure you find a good and safe neighborhood. Also, see whether the neighborhood has all the basic facilities needed for survival or not.

Figure out relocation expenses

You, being the single woman will, in all probability, have to bear the moving expenses alone. So to avoid any financial issues later, it is better to fix a budget and start saving if needed. To understand the approx. moving costs, you may do your research and accordingly cut off all your unnecessary expenses if your current budget is less.

While estimating the relocation expenses, don’t just count the moving service charges, but also allocate funds for other indirect relocation expenses.

Hire moving service

It’s tough to handle the whole move being a single woman and so, I believe having a good moving company by your side will give you a huge amount of relief. However, you should be careful of fraud and inefficient companies and be sure that the company you are hiring is a registered and trusted one.

To ensure that, you need to do proper background research of the companies, check every online review and even do proper verification of documents before finally making the deal.

You can used this platform to get free moving quotations from document verified local moving companies near you. I will also suggest you to avoid too low rates because that in high probability will make you fall in the hands of inefficient or fraud movers.

One more thing if you want to crack a profitable deal with the moving companies, make sure you shortlist at least 4-5 movers at the beginning because that will help you compare rates and bargain with the company representatives well.

Start sorting items

Once you have hired a mover, do not waste any more time because packing will take a lot of time if you have planned to do it yourself. So, start with making the packing list. And, while you are selecting items to carry to your new space, it is better that you leave the useless ones behind and carry the items that are useful, special or are rare. Carrying unnecessary stuffs will simply increase your packing and moving costs and will be a waste of your time and energy so please avoid doing that mistake.

In fact, it is best to sell or donate the items you are not carrying but in good condition. This will help you make some profit or at least do some good social work.

Get everything packed

I generally suggest single women to take professional help in case of packing because it is often tough to handle all the packing yourself with none to help you. After all, there is no point in compromising with the safety of the items because that may lead to damages in transit. However, if you want to save some money or have the confidence that you can pull off the packing on your own, then you can surely try that.

Just make sure you buy boxes and other packing materials ahead of time and of good quality because the better the quality, the more protected your items will be. As far as the actual packing goes, it is important that you do proper cushioning of the delicate items so that they are well protected. Basically, the better the items stay in their places inside the boxes, the better they will be able to survive the bumpy roads.

And, then, do not forget to label the boxes. This will avoid you misplacing them. As far as the packing the essential boxes containing crucial items are concerned, keep it for the last. You may get it done 1-2 days before the day of journey.

Update your address

This is an important task and it is better if you do it early and before leaving. Thankfully, it is not much of a difficult thing to do today. You can just visit the post office and submit the change in address form after filling it up or even get it done online.  Also if there are any subscriptions like magazines, newspapers etc then make sure to put request for change in address, as required.

Notify important parties

Then there is another task of notifying important parties that you must also take care of. Be it your bank to employer’s human resource department to newspaper magazines you are subscribed to brokerage firms to utility companies, insurance, credit cards etc. everyone need to get notified that you are moving to another city or state.

Defrost refrigerator

Defrosting your refrigerator and then cleaning it should be done at least 1-2 days before the date of moving. This is because defrosting takes around 8 hours and then cleaning will take some more time, so better not keep it for the last day.

Cleanups before leaving

If you are selling your old home or if you have been living in a rented apartment for so long, make sure you do some basic cleaning of the whole home before leaving. If not, in the latter case, forget about getting the security deposit back. So, it is advisable that you inspect the whole home and do the cleaning up work and repairing work if needed.

Do follow up with the mover

It is important to do follow ups with the mover time to time. Make sure you have clearly discussed everything with the movers regarding the date of journey, time of starting the journey, about the route to take and other details regarding the transportation thoroughly.

I would also request you to  keep updated about weather forecasts and if you see that the weather forecast is not good on the day you are about to relocate, you may even discuss that with your movers and change your date if possible.

Get prepared

No matter which day you are actually relocating on, It’s better to start the journey early in the morning so that you can reach your new destination before it gets too dark. I am not much in favor of you travelling alone in the dark so it is better to start early. And, if the distance is too long, you may even think of taking a break somewhere during the night and then restarting on the next morning.

Also, make sure you dress up in comfy clothes as per the weather of that day and keep all the essential stuffs along with you. This includes keeping all the medicines, important documents, some extra clothes along with some snacks and water etc. with you.

Do some cleaning

After you relocate, do some basic cleaning of the new space. You do not have to do thorough cleaning right away but without basic cleaning, it is not much hygienic to live there, so clean it.

Secure your home

One of the most important things that you should consider after relocating is to secure your new home which definitely includes changing the locks, securing doors and windows, installing security cameras and fire alarms etc.

Unpack slowly

You will get tired after the relocation, so there is no hurry to unpack all of them right after the move. Take some rest and then unpack them. Start with the essential box and then slowly move to unpacking the rest of the boxes.

Also, take your time in reorganizing the items in the new space.

Explore the new place

Important aspect of relocation definitely is how well you are able to adjust to the new location. And, for that, you need to get out more, learn interesting things about the space, specialize more etc. Remember the quicker you are getting familiar with the place, the faster you can get settled down there. And, it will also help in learning the ways of life there which is also very important to know for your safety.

Over to you

It is a fact that things are harder for a single woman than a single man because of the additional challenges that society throws at women. But, I believe with strong will power and confidence, you can pull off many things on your own and one of them is definitely home relocation.

If you are enough updated with the basic moving facts and are organized from the beginning, then planning and executing a move is not that tough.
